Golovkin eyes history against Alvarez stand-in

Most ringside observers felt Golovkin should have won by close decision, but the fight was too close to vehemently complain that the fight was ruled a draw. "I see why he's trying to get that extra edge", said Martirosyan, referencing Alvarez's failed drug test in March.

Pictured, Golovkin speaks of Kazakhstan speaks to the press during a media workout before his middleweight fight against Vanes Martirosyan at the Glendale Fighting Club in Glendale, California, April 23, 2018.

Before Saturday night, the 32-year-old Martirosyan hadn't boxed since losing a unanimous decision to former WBA/IBO 154-pound champion Erislandy Lara in their 12-round rematch in May 2016.

Late replacement fights are very unsafe because neither opponent is really ready to fight their opponent's style, they spend the majority of training camp focusing on a gameplan for another opponent but then the opponent either pulls out due to injury or a positive drug test.

Then in September, he fought Canelo Alvarez to a draw (118-110 Alvarez, 115-113 Golovkin, and 114-114) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Golovkin has repeated the record in this weight category, having defended the world champion title in 20 duels in a row.

"I want everyone", Golovkin said. Braekhus hit the canvas for the first time in her career. "Vanes is a very good fighter".

Simmons is averaging 15.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 4.6 turnovers through the first seven games of the postseason. We didn't execute offensively what we wanted to, every time down the floor. "So that's not going to change".

"This is a sport to him, and the sport is the most important thing", said Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez.

Martirosyan was in big trouble from the beginning of the second round as Golovkin rendered the challenger helpless by landing a right uppercut on the chin.

So Golovkin's camp went to work on a late replacement bout for StubHub Center's outdoor ring among Los Angeles' savvy boxing fans. So Martirosyan took the fight of his life on short notice.

Now that Saunders appears more amenable to a fight, Golovkin could lose the IBF belt simply because he wanted to keep busy while waiting for his payday from Alvarez.

That fight seems unlikely to happen, since Alvarez's suspension will be up in time for a rematch in September.

California-born teen featherweight Jesse Rodriguez stayed unbeaten as a pro with a third-round KO in a scheduled six-rounder against 48-fight veteran Armando Vazquez.
