The Trump administration says it wants a big chunk of auto manufacturing to be produced by workers earning around $15 an hour.
On June 2, Trump doubled down on a past comment that for the U.S. it's "easy to win" a trade war, because America's large trade deficit makes other nations more reliant on the United States as a market than the USA is on them.
The worry remains that Trump may just be getting started. According to Forbes magazine, each is worth about $60 billion. That's still a small increase, but one that might get the attention of the Federal Reserve, which could spur more aggressive policy tightening.
"What is un-American is when shadowy billionaires pour unlimited money into our democracy to rig the system to benefit themselves and the wealthiest one percent. the Koch brothers seem to believe in an America where the system is rigged to benefit the very wealthy", then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said during a floor speech in 2014. Business spending is bouncing back after years of caution following the global financial crisis, and is partly driven by the enactment of Republican corporate tax cuts.

He has pushed for China to open its markets more to US agricultural exports, which would give Trump a win to brag about and likely boost his chances of winning farm states like Iowa in the 2020 election.
And former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad was appointed US ambassador to China in part because of his agricultural ties. Analysts at ING Bank NV are calling the current situation a "cold" trade conflict with a muted economic impact.
"Despite the strong incentives to avoid a trade war with the [United States], China can not tolerate the perception that it has yielded to U.S. demands", analysts at investment bank Nomura said in a research note Monday.
He added that while "China and the United States can sit down at the negotiating table calmly, it means that there remains an opportunity to solve the problem and both sides can achieve the desired results from the negotiations".
The European Union included jewelry products, Bourbon whiskey, automotive glass, telecom equipment and a wide range of personal care products. China has promised to enact retaliatory sanctions of its own - targeting USA agricultural goods, automobiles, and aircraft - as soon as the US tariffs begin.
The failure to come to a deal over the weekend, more than a sign that the tariffs are coming, might more likely be a sign that the White House is waiting to see how the Kim summit shakes out.
