DeAndre Jordan will opt out of contract, will become a free agent

Even though Dallas declined Dirk Nowitzki's player option, the Mavs plan on resigning the veteran big man.

Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan has informed the Clippers he will opt out of the $24.1 million player option on his contract for next season and will become a free agent.

According to Stein, the mutual decision is to maximize the salary cap space of the team during the offseason.

The New York Times first reported the decision on Nowitzki's option.

Jordan played all 10 seasons of his career with the Clippers. Nowitzki and Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant are the only players in league history to play 20 years with one franchise. With 31,187 career points, the 13-time All-Star ranks sixth on the NBA's all-time scoring list and will add to his Hall of Fame resume as he continues playing.

Celebration, defiance mix at New York City gay pride parade
As many as 300,000 people crowded into downtown Seattle for the annual Pride Parade on Sunday. For the second year in a row, uniformed police officers did not participate in the parade.

There are some within the talent pool of free agents that will nearly certainly look elsewhere this summer in large part due to the awkward fit they had this past season with their respective teams. He is expected to be fully cleared for basketball activities well in advance of training camp. That included a stretch of 11 consecutive 50-plus-win seasons from 2000 to 2011 - a run bettered only by the Lakers from 1979 to 1991 and San Antonio Spurs from 1999 to 2017.

The reversal was a stunning setback for Dallas, which made the playoffs without Jordan the following year but lost in the first round and now is coming off consecutive losing seasons for the first time in almost 20 years.

The Mavs also traded up for global star Luka Doncic in the 2018 Draft.

However, while a majority of reports have Jordan headed to the Texas Triangle, the Bay Area is not about to give up.

Last season, Nowitzki averaged 12.0 points, 5.7 rebounds in 24.7 minutes over 77 games and proved that he can still perform at a high level.
