Finding mosquitoes that test positive for West Nile Virus is not unexpected.
The mosquitoes were collected off North Spring Court, near Campbell and Jupiter roads, according to Garland health officials. The state expects to identify a few cases of West Nile virus annually.
Last summer, mosquitoes in Owensboro tested positive, too, but according to the Centers for Disease Control website, the only West Nile virus cases in western Kentucky in 2017 were reported in Hopkins County, where three cases were diagnosed.
Alan Gettman, the state's mosquito abatement coordinator, says it's unusual to find the virus this early. All EPA-registered insect repellents are evaluated for safety and effectiveness, and will contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol as the active ingredient.
Mosquitoes can be more than pesky insects.
Health officials in OH and Washington are urging people to protect themselves against mosquitoes after insects in these states tested positive for the West Nile virus.
While 80 percent of the people infected suffer no symptoms, those who do commonly report headaches, fevers, muscle aches and extreme fatigue. Always follow the product label instructions.

"If it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes", officials state in the release. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property by emptying flower pots, old vehicle tires, buckets, and other containers.
A warning - Dawn and Dusk are times to avoid outdoors.
Maintain window and door screens to keep mosquitos out of buildings.
