EPA Administrator Pruitt Resigns

Scott Pruitt resigns from EPA

Trump’s most homophobic Cabinet member just got shown the door

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt listens to questions as he testifies before the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, April 26, 2018.

Andrew Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist who has been the Environmental Protection Agency's deputy director, will temporarily step into the top role following Scott Pruitt's resignation.

In a recent interview, Wheeler told the Washington Examiner that he wasn't interested in the top job at the agency.

The Post story offered one supportive quote - Trump saying, "I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda". We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!

But unlike Pruitt, Wheeler is considered low-key and is a Washington insider who has spent much of his career in the nation's capital. He is expected to take the same deregulatory tack as Pruitt. "Thank you again, Mr. President, for the honor of serving you and I wish you Godspeed in all that you put your hand to". Before becoming a principal at the firm Faegre Baker Daniels, Wheeler was chief counsel for the Republicans on the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee.

He also touted what he called "improved environmental outcomes as well as historical regulatory reform" that was "occurring at an unprecedented pace" during his tenure at the agency. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, who rejects mainstream climate science. He also urged the Department of Interior to reduce the size of Bears Ears National Monument to make more land available for uranium mining.

It's possible that Trump will decide to keep Wheeler on as EPA head, but his prospects might be hampered by anti-Trump social media posts that Wheeler made before the 2016 election.

"He is not an accidental administrator".

Under Wheeler, "the whole tone is going to be different", the energy lobbyist said. That time can be extended longer depending on when Trump decides to nominate a replacement. "I think he's a very smart and careful student of environmental law - there's no two ways about that".

Trump tweeted Thursday that EPA deputy Andrew Wheeler would "assume duties as the acting administrator of the EPA".

One of the most visible examples of public pressure against Pruitt was when a woman named Kristin Mink, holding her child, confronted Pruitt inside a restaurant and asked for his resignation.

The agency proposed weakening the environmental standards for gliders based on a study that was backed by Fitzgerald, the country's biggest glider manufacturer.

As Wheeler prepares to take charge of EPA, the company he once lobbied for is trying to win contracts to clean up abandoned uranium mines, according to EFI's website and its CEO, Mark Chalmers. "I believe that man has an impact on the climate", he said, "but what's not completely understood is what the impact is".

Time magazine provided four things to know about Wheeler.

'We're proud of him for that, ' Pollard said.

Others were less enthused, with Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, offered a slightly rosier outlook Friday.

Travel records showed the U.S. government spent $17,000 in taxpayer money on a December trip to Morocco to promote U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas, which is not part of the EPA's jurisdiction.

EPA also said it was rewriting rules governing pollution from coal ash, a coal-power-plant waste byproduct that contains toxic heavy metals.
