The head of U.S. intelligence has said that he did not mean to disrespect President Donald Trump with his "awkward response" on hearing the news that he had invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to visit Washington.

'When you hear the Fake News talking negatively about my meeting with President Putin, and all that I gave up, remember, I gave up NOTHING, we merely talked about future benefits for both countries, ' Trump wrote Monday. "Also, we got along very well".

The strong GOP support helps explain Trump's decision to dig in and attack critics, as he did Monday when he tweeted that he gave up 'NOTHING to Putin.

The protests started Monday when protesters described their actions as "greeting" Trump on his return from Helsinki, where he met with Vladimir Putin behind closed doors.

Trump was widely condemned following his press conference alongside Putin in Helsinki, prompting the president and his officials to issue several corrections throughout the week.

The intelligence chief was speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado on Thursday when news of a possible second Trump-Putin summit later this year broke.

Trump has been criticised by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers for his joint news conference with Putin in Helsinki in which he declined to challenge the Russian president on issues such as Moscow's interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and the seizure of Crimea from Ukraine.
