Barcelona have swooped to sign Brazilian forward Malcom on a five-year deal from Girondins Bordeaux for an initial €41 million (US$47.89 million) in a surprise move after AS Roma had struck a deal with the French club.
Barcelona appear to have won the race to sign Malcom from Bordeaux, pipping Roma to his signature at the last minute.
"I knew there were so many teams interested in Malcom, including Barcelona, and it's for that reason we found an agreement as soon as possible".
"I informed our president [when things changed] and he asked me to push forward and make a new offer that was better than Barça's", he continued. "Pallotti made the decision to make the best offer possible but when the negotiation became an auction we chose to withdraw".
"I told them enough, because we did not want to enter an auction: we could not continue like that, and yesterday we had only raised our offer because of the willingness and desire of our president".

Similarly, analysts don't expect European Union antitrust probes to force changes that significantly dent Google earnings. Government pressure to improve moderation of user-created content has forced Google to hire more analysts.
Bordeaux accepted Roma's bid of 32 + 4 but then allowed Barca in with their better offer.
Liverpool's record bid for Roma goalkeeper Alisson was too good to refuse, according to AS Roma's director of football.
# Barcelona then made an offer for Malcom outbidding Roma.
"He was a player we liked a lot and had the profile we were looking for".
The Brazilian, who can play as a winger or attacking midfielder, will undergo a medical on Wednesday before being unveiled as Barcelona's third signing of the summer.
Yet to be capped at senior level by Brazil, he scored 20 goals and set up 13 in 84 Ligue 1 games for Bordeaux following his 2016 move from Corinthians. Already this month they signed Clement Lenglet for €35 million and Arthur for €40 million.
