At least three people were killed when a tanker truck exploded after a collision on a motorway just outside Bologna today, engulfing the area in flames and black smoke.

Italian private Sky TG24 reported that some of the injured people had been hit by flying glass when windows in nearby buildings exploded.

Authorities said a major highway interchange had been closed north of the city due to the accident.
Several hours after the explosion, firefighters said they had extinguished the flames, ANSA reported.
The accident was similar to one on Saturday, when a truck laden with tomatoes crashed into a white van and four migrants died.
A fuel tanker collided with another truck carrying vehicles on the A14 highway near the airport, sparking a fireball and plume of smoke was visible for kilometres. Video released by police shows an extensive crater and the charred remains of the destroyed truck.
