In another explicit display of the country's displeasure with Canada, Saudi Arabia's state airline has suspended all flights to and from Toronto.

The state airline operates at least two routes flying from Toronto.

Canada has responded by saying it "will continue to advocate for human rights".

In response, the Saudi government has expelled Canada's ambassador from the country and frozen all new trade with Canada.

According to a report from Saudi-owned media outlet, Al Arabiya, the country announced the "suspension of training, scholarships and fellowships to Canada and the transfer [of] all its students in that state to other countries".

Saudi Arabia has frozen all trade, expelled Canada's ambassador and ordered its citizens studying in Canada to leave.

Canada has said it's alarmed by the move out of Saudi Arabia, but has not walked back the comments that apparently prompted the row in the first place.

Samar's brother, blogger Raif Badawi, was arrested in 2012 and sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail for "insulting Islam" in a case that sparked an worldwide outcry.

Raif Badawi was arrested in 2012 for running a blog that promoted free speech and women's rights in Saudi Arabia.

His wife, Ensaf Haidar, and three children were granted Canadian citizenship earlier this summer, and live in Quebec's Eastern Townships.

When asked about the contract, Freeland said the government "looks forward" to hearing from Riyadh about the future of the deal.
