Zimbabwe opposition file presidential poll challenge

Advocate Thabani Mpofu, head of a legal team that is mounting the MDC Constitutional Court petition, vowed Wednesday "the poll challenge is going ahead, prepared, clear and convincing".

"It will no longer happen. We are seeking a declaration to the effect that the presidential election was not properly conducted", MDC party lawyer Thanbani Mpofu said.

The EU, US, Canadian and Australian missions to Zimbabwe urged authorities to guarantee Biti's safety and human rights, and said they were "deeply disturbed" by reports that opposition supporters were being targeted by the Zimbabwean security forces.

Under the constitution, a losing presidential candidate has seven days to challenge the result from when a victor is declared.

The inauguration should take place within 48 hours of the court's ruling, it added.

Essentially what this means is that the nation will be in some of inertia for at most the next two weeks, given that the Constitution allows the court a maximum of 14 days within which it can deal with the matter.

Lombok quake : Death toll rises to 259 amid rescue efforts
The powerful 6.9-magnitude quake that struck the island of Lombok has left more than 130 people dead and displaced thousands. Indonesia's Chief Security Minister had earlier said 319 people had died, while local media reported figures as high as 347.

The president, the ZANU-PF party and the electoral commission have denied all charges of cheating.

They may now need to send apologies just in case someone turns up.

Ms. Nauert said the U.S. government is also gravely concerned by credible reports of numerous detentions, beatings, and other abuses of Zimbabweans over the past week, particularly targeting opposition activists. "But if they want to meet us in court we have sufficient legal minds to meet them squarely in court", ZANU-PF legal secretary Paul Mangwana said.

The election passed off relatively smoothly but its aftermath revealed the deep rifts in Zimbabwean society.

Zimbabwe's defeated opposition faced a deadline Friday to file its legal challenge to try to overturn the July 30 election result, which has been mired in fraud allegations and a government crackdown on opponents.
