At IFA, Intel unveils new 8th Generation mobile CPUs

Intel just unveiled the ultra-efficient chips that might power Apple's MacBook Air replacement

On Tuesday afternoon, Intel unveiled the new chips just ahead of the IFA 2018 trade show in Berlin.

The i7 chip ramps up to 4.6GHz when running at full puff, while the i5 and i3 processors hit 3.9GHz.

Built as a stop-gap while Intel irons out the continued problems it has experienced with its 10nm Cannon Lake node, the 14nm Whiskey Lake mobile parts include on-board Embedded DisplayPort 1.4 connectivity with support for external DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4 devices, extending to HDMI 2.0a with the optional level-shifting protocol converter (LSPCON) hardware, and two channel DDR4 or LPDDR3 support. Gigabit Wi-Fi (Wireless-AC 160 MHz) is the most noteworthy, with OEMs no longer having to include separate modules for this feature.

Intel Corp., whose processors power most of the world's computers, on Tuesday announced new additions to its 8 generation processors, targeted at super-thin and light laptops, with the promise of up to 12 times faster connectivity speeds and twice the performance of a 5-year-old PC.

The processors will also offer double-digit gains in office productivity for everyday web browsing and light content creation over the previous generation of processors, the statement said. They also support Gigabit Wi-Fi out of the box and come with LTE support (the Amber Lake chips).

But she also wrote more prescient words: "I learned that no one can stop me but me". "And she's still going through hell". Since ABC announced the firing of Roseanne Barr from the eponymous show she created, controversy has abounded.

Intel also brags that its low-power design will translate into noticeably better battery life.

Intel says thanks to its power optimizations, laptops can last up to 16 hours on a single charge, "with power-optimized systems targeted to achieve about 19 hours".

First, Intel actually mentions Amazon Alexa with regards to its new U-series chips, though it's not totally clear why.

Lastly, the new U-series processor can also support Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos immersive audio. In the three slides below you can see the respective claims for each of these activities - versus the above specced five year old PC.

The higher-end U-series parts, meanwhile, are comprised of the Core i3-8145U 2C4T at 2.1/3.9GHz, the 4C8T Core i5-8265U at 1.6/3.9GHz, and the 4C8T Core i7-8565U at 1.8/4.6GHz.
