Ayanna Pressley Defeats Longtime Representative Mike Capuano in MA Democratic Primary Upset

The Boston city councilwoman just beat 10-term incumbent progressive Congressman Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary in MA, securing the Democratic nomination for Congress for Massachusetts's 7th district.

Mr. Capuano conceded the race to Ms. Pressley on Tuesday night, though the Associated Press had yet to declare a victor in the race.

With no Republican challenger in her district, Pressley's path to Congress this November is clear.

Capuano voted against the Iraq War and the Patriot Act, and supported Medicare-for-all and sanctuary cities long before they became mainstream ideas. "Ours was truly a people powered, grassroots campaign. that dared to do what Massachusetts Democrats aren't supposed to do".

Johanna Ediger of Quincy was among the voters hoping to oust an incumbent Tuesday night, casting her ballot for Lynch's opponent, Brianna Wu of Dedham.

Capuano is considered one of the most liberal members of the MA delegation, and Pressley had acknowledged she had few major policy quarrels with him.

Unlike Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley's rise through the ranks of the Democratic Party was a more traditional one.

While Capuano is well-respected Democrat who built a solidly progressive voting record over his 20 years in Congress, Pressley argued that-in the age of Trump-Massachusetts' seventh congressional district and the nation need "bold, activist leadership".

Pressley is backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the leftist socialist who defeated Crowley in NY on a message of pushing to "Abolish ICE".

On Tuesday night, the socialist tweeted that she "bonded" with Pressley "over running while constantly told it's "not our turn, ' that we 'weren't ready, ' 'good enough, ' or 'experienced" enough".

In her victory speech, Pressley expressed the importance of new, diverse faces in her party, and why so many fringe Democrats are making a difference.

Video posted on Twitter by Jesse Mermell shows Pressley, a Boston City councilor, trying to gather her emotions as results show she beat incumbent Rep. Her win comes at the tail end of a primary season in which black politicians have made a series of advances. She ran on a platform of abolishing ICE-that's the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency-and speaking for prisoners behind bars.

"I have been really furious about the constant charges being lobbed against me about identity politics that, by the way, are only lobbed against women and candidates of color", she said in one debate.
