Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre messages do not represent the official warning status for New Zealand.

It hit 123 km east south east of Suva, Fiji, at a depth of 669 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said today. Also not declared the tsunami threat.

The quake was initially registered as an 8.1 magnitude by USGS but was later downgraded to a 7.8.

The quake has been rated by Global tectonic reports among the largest deep focus earthquakes ever observed and was one of ten earthquakes over M 4.3 recorded in the region east of Fiji today.
