TROPICS: Florence to become a hurricane today; TD 9 strengthening

Power outages can last months and affected areas can be be "uninhabitable for weeks or months", the hurricane center says.

According to The Washington Post, if Florence hits the U.S. East Coast, it will be the first to do so for a storm in its present location.

Tropical Depression Nine became Tropical Storm Isaac on Saturday afternoon over the eastern tropical Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center said.

The Weather Channel said that "all interests along the U.S. East Coast from Florida to New England should monitor closely the forecast of Florence".

Risky swells generated by Florence were expected to batter Bermuda early in the week, as well as parts of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

Chances of formation through the next 48 hours is high at 70 percent; chances grow to 90 percent through the next five days, according to N.H.C.

Meteorologists are also tracking two tropical storms which formed off the coast of Africa.

However, the hurricane was soon downgraded to a tropical storm after its winds rapidly weakened down to 70mph. Then an nearly due west path is forecast through the rest of the weekend and through early next week.
