Authorities direct traffic on Hoffmeyer Road near the Vintage Place neighborhood where several law enforcement officers were shot, one fatally, on October 3, 2018, in Florence, S.C.

Ordinarily, investigations of shootings involving SC law enforcement officers are handled by the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Hopkins, 74, is a disabled Vietnam veteran and disbarred lawyer who has faced several charges in recent years. The judge at the hearing deferred bond, however, because the charge has to be heard by a circuit court judge. Carraway, 52, of Darlington, had recently celebrated 30 years as a police officer. During the intense 2-hour firefight and standoff, several officers were shot, leaving them wounded and exposed. Hopkins had been in the hospital since he was taken into custody after the Wednesday afternoon shooting, but was taken to jail Friday, Lott said.

"It is my understanding that they didn't know the level of fire power that they were going into", he said.

That injury occurred when he reportedly fell at the site where the shootings occurred, reported WPDE reporter Tonya Brown in a tweet.

The conditions of the three other Florence officers and three deputies who were wounded were not immediately known.

Of the three surviving police officers, one suffered a graze wound to his head and was paralyzed on one side.

Heidler said he was there and the wait "seemed like it was forever, but it was not".

"I want you to pray for the family who lost the bravest police officer I have ever known", Heidler said, visibly overcome by emotion at the news conference.

The officers were shot as they tried to serve a search warrant on a home in Florence, according to Florence County Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby. He was charged in 2015 and 2017 for "running at large" (crimes related to animal abuse), reports WFYMY News.

Authorities are investigating the shooting.

Investigators say the incident unfolded Wednesday when officers went to serve a warrant in Florence. Two of the six wounded officers were released from the hospital Thursday.

So many people came to Carraway's rural house across from a soybean field that they were parking in an empty lot next door.

He said Carraway, his youth football coach in the late 1990s, was a down-to-earth community leader with whom young people felt comfortable discussing their problems.

At a vigil Thursday evening at the First Baptist Church of Florence, Carraway's pastor said he wore two badges.

The shooting took place off Hoffmeyer Road in the Vintage Place subdivision, an upscale neighborhood in the county.

President Donald Trump reacted to the tragedy on Twitter.

On Wednesday night, President Donald Trump tweeted: "My thoughts and prayers are with the Florence County Sheriff's Office and the Florence Police Department tonight, in SC".

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster took to social media asking the public for their prayers.
