A gunman yelling "all Jews must die" has stormed a Pittsburgh synagogue during Saturday sabbath services and shot worshipers, killing at least eight people and wounding six more.

KDKA has reported that police was able to extract several people from the basement of the synagogue as well as from the attic.

Trump ended the tweet by saying "God Bless All!".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday he was "heartbroken and appalled" by the shooting.

"Our nation and the world are shocked and stunned by the grief".

"It's a bad, awful thing that's going on with hate in our country". "My prayers are w/ the victims, their families, & friends".

"Squirrel Hill has always been a nice, safe area to life in", Markowitz said. Bowers, described as heavy-set and bearded, was also wounded.

Bowers appears to have been active on Gab, a social media outlet popular with the alt-right. "Beware of active shooter", he posted.

The gunman is now in custody after surrendering to the authorities.

In a tweet, Mr Trump encouraged people to shelter in place and said "looks like multiple fatalities". But if they had some kind of protection inside the temple, maybe it could have been a much different situation.

"To see this happen again and again, for so many years, it's just a shame". The number of casualties are yet to be confirmed by the police. "They should pay the ultimate price, I've felt that way for a long time". "This has to stop".

Television pictures showed a police SWAT team and ambulances in the area. "He doesn't want any of them to live", said another officer.

"There were police cars everywhere", he said. Pittsburgh Public Safety issued a warning on Twitter. "More info will be released when it is available".

Witnesses said the gunman walked into the synagogue and opened fire. The officers are in a stable condition.

Police were still clearing the building, the official said.

Multiple people are dead at a Pittsburgh synagogue where police are responding to reports of an active shooter, according to local officials.

Fred Rabner, a member of the synagogue, said it was a "close-knit community", and that everyone was calling around to make sure their loved ones are OK.
