At least 11 people injured in California bar shooting

Several Injured In Shooting At Bar In Southern California Says Police

California shooting: Thousand Oaks restaurant Borderline Bar and Grill attacked | Daily Star

A sheriff says 13 people are dead, including a sheriff's sergeant and the gunman, after a shooting inside a crowded Southern California bar late Wednesday.

It was college night and country two-step lessons were being offered at the Borderline, according to its website.

Sheriff Dean says 28-year-old Ian David Long was armed with a Glock 21, a.45-caliber handgun created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber. It remains unclear what motivated the attack.

It's been less than two weeks since 11 people were murdered at a Pittsburgh synagogue during a mass shooting.

"It's a horrific incident", Dean said. Some students from both California Lutheran University and nearby Pepperdine University are believed to have been present at the event on Wednesday night.

The gunman shot a bouncer or security guard outside and forced his way inside the bar, according to witnesses. And the gunman was throwing smoke grenades all over the place.

"I think everyone was in so much of a shock that it was sheer panic", Whittler said. I ran out the front door. "He was just lazy, I guess", Winnett recalled. People were trying to get out the window....

The gunman is described as having a beard and wearing a hat and glasses.

A sheriff's deputy was among those shot, reports said, adding that there were around a 100 patrons inside the nightclub when the shooting began.

"It was chaos, people jumping out of windows, people hopping over gates to get out" Steinwender told KABC-TV.

Dean said the other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident in which Long was the victim of a battery at a bar. Then he started moving to the right.

At least 12 victims were fatally shot in the gunfire, while multiple other injuries were reported.

USA Today reported early Thursday that the suspect was dead, but the sheriff's spokesman had no immediate information on that report.

Nineteen-year-old Tayler Whitler says she was dancing and her friends were at a table by the door as the gunman opened fire. He is survived by a wife and son.

Dean says around 10 other people were shot and wounded.

No word yet on the number of injured, but around a dozen people are known to have gone to the hospital.
