Congressional Democrats on Thursday demanded emergency hearings in the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate President Donald Trump's ouster of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, calling the move an effort to undermine a federal probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

Demonstrations are taking place in more than 1,000 US cities and towns on Thursday evening-beginning at 5:00 PM (local time)-in response to President Donald Trump "installing a hack" to oversee the ongoing investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Asked about Whitaker on Friday, Trump told journalists: "I don't know Matt Whitaker".

The AP reported that the resignation "was the culmination of a toxic relationship" between Sessions and Trump based on a few factors, but largely Session's having recused himself from dealing with Mueller's probe.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's appointment letter authorizing the special counsel investigation did not ban Mueller from investigating Trump's finances.

Sessions has since then stayed away from the Russian Federation investigation, while he and Rosenstein have maintained the integrity of Mueller, while Whitaker has taken the opposite standpoint, accusing Mueller of "going too far".

Sam Clovis, who was co-chair of Trump's 2016 campaign and has testified before the grand jury in the Mueller investigation, said he and Whitaker became good friends when they ran against each other as Republicans in a 2014 Senate primary campaign in Iowa.

George Conway III, a prominent lawyer, penned an op-ed in the New York Times along with former solicitor general Neal Katyal, arguing that Trump's power play at the Justice Department is 'unconstitutional'.

Former Justice Department official Ian Prior tells CBN News Whitaker should expect ongoing attacks.

"Since the day I was honored to be sworn in as attorney general of the United States, I came to work at the Department of Justice every day determined to do my duty and serve my country", Sessions wrote. But I didn't know Matt Whitaker.

Ethics officials at the Justice Department are likely to review his past work to see if he has any financial or personal conflicts.

The appointment generated immediate controversy given Whitaker's previous public comments criticizing the probe.

Still, those in Alabama touting a possible Sessions return to the Senate include Luther Strange, the Republican who temporarily replaced Sessions in the Senate a year ago. Trump has crossed a red line - and we're mobilizing.

Schumer and other leading Democrats were joined in their call for an unhampered probe by Republican Mitt Romney, a former presidential candidate and frequent Trump critic who won a US Senate seat in Tuesday's midterm. In fact, it allows Mueller to pursue "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".

And over the past year, Whitaker has told friends about his growing relationship with Trump. Nor does he think Congress needs to take steps to protect it, as some lawmakers, including U.S. Sen. He also added that the fact Comey did not prosecute Trump's chief political opponent was sufficient grounds for Trump to fire him.

Activists across the Bay Area Thursday evening were protesting President Donald Trump's replacement of his attorney general after embattled former Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned on Wednesday. Conway is the husband of the top White House aide Kellyanne Conway.
