Putin says had good conversation with Trump

‘Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism,’ says France’s Emmanuel Macron at World War I commemoration

Trump marks 100 years since end of World War I with tribute to fallen soldiers

In France, President Donald Trump commemorated all of the American and French soldiers who served in World War I in honor of the 100-year anniversary of Armistice Day.

He skipped out of a visit to an American military cemetery outside of Paris yesterday due to a threatened rainstorm, and did not walk with other world leaders in France today.

"They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn't even defy the weather to pay his respects to The Fallen", Nicholas Soames, a British Conservative member of parliament and grandson of Winston Churchill tweeted.

The Paris commemorations, centred on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe, are set to feature warnings about the modern-day danger of nationalism.

World leaders gathered in Paris on a rainy Sunday morning to mark 100 years since the end of the World War I with a reminder not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

After the ceremony, Merkel and UN Secretary-General Guterres gave the opening speeches at a new peace forum in Paris set up by Macron - with both warning that rising nationalism threatens the rules-based global order.

Mr Macron recalled that one billion shells fell on France alone from 1914 to 1918. They turned the tide of the war.

"Dear mother, I think of you all at home and I know if I am spared to get back that I shall appreciate home more than ever, ever before".

Merkel will give the opening address alongside UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at a conference called the Paris Peace Forum which will take place after a memorial service on the Champs-Elysees. "We can't have that", Trump said at a Houston, Texas rally on the 23rd of October.

The Paris Peace Forum aims at promoting concrete actions toward peace and should be repeated every year, he said.

Last to arrive was Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This week, that divide stretched further when Macron appeared to call for the creation of a European army in an interview on French radio, saying that the continent could no longer rely on the support of the United States in defence matters.

The weekend exposed tensions with US allies in Europe over Trump's decision to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russian Federation, which has kept the continent free of theater-range nuclear missiles for more than 30 years.

"President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the US, China and Russian Federation", the US president tweeted, referring to remarks made by Macron in an interview three days earlier. "Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which the US subsidizes greatly!"

Macron did point out similarities between himself and Trump, explaining that neither of them rose through the ranks as "classical politicians". He is scheduled to depart for the United States after that.

Macron suggested that European corporations and entities were deeply dependent on the USA dollar. He later described the commemoration as "very beautiful".
