Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Russian President Vladimir Putin were caught high fiving at the G20 summit in Argentina

While some world leaders distanced themselves from the Saudi crown prince accused of ordering the assassination of a journalist, and from Russian President Vladimir Putin, those two men appeared happy to see each other at the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Friday.

Already the French Presidency has said that Emmanuel Macron spoke to the Crown Prince on the summit's sidelines about both the journalist's murder and Saudi's role in the war in Yemen, which the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

As worldwide pressure builds on Saudi Arabia over the brutal murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its consulate in Istanbul early last month, the costs for Riyadh continue to rise.

Canada, France, the U.S. and Germany have imposed targeted sanctions related to the murder of the prominent Saudi journalist. (AAP) Prime Minister Scott Morrison attends the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In the audio of the conversation, it's possible to make out the prince saying "Don't worry", to which Macron responds: "I am worried".

The CIA has reportedly assessed with high confidence that MbS ordered the murder of Khashoggi, a Saudi dissident and writer, and that members of the crown prince's inner circle carried out the brutal killing.

Saudi-owned broadcaster Al Arabiya posted video on Twitter showing a cordial handshake between bin Salman and Chinese President Xi Jinping as the two held a bilateral meeting.

Despite the reassurances, Macron appears to reply "I am anxious", as the awkward encounter continued.

Putin high-fives MBS at G20, but did he shake Trump's hand? But with the agency not publicly stating so, Trump has attempted to deflect blame away from the crown prince. In fact, Trump even cancelled a formal sit-down with Putin over Moscow's seizure of Ukrainian vessels. According to the White House they only "exchanged pleasantries", and the President said they had "no discussion".

Meanwhile Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prince Mohammed shared a smiley, enthusiastic greeting at the gathering. French President Emmanuel Macron has also said he will meet with the Saudi leader.
