The windstorm sent trees and branches crashing onto the street and split the iconic White Rock pier in two, trapping a man on the far end as pieces of the platform collapsed into the crashing waves.
BC Hydro crews have been working around the clock, and the Crown corporation said it had restored power to more than 530,000 customers since the storm.
According to BC Hydro, more than 55,000 customers on the island are in the dark, as are more than 15,000 people on the Lower Mainland.
"Sustained southeast winds of 50 to 80 km/h have already developed early this morning over much of the south coast and will increase to 70 to 90 km/h later this morning", read the notice from Environment Canada.
Another strong storm system is approaching Vancouver Island.

The company recommends passengers check the BC Ferries website before heading out to the terminal.
In Nanaimo, officials are urging residents to conserve water as the city continues to fix its water treatment plant, which was also damaged in the storm on Thursday.
