Marvin Lewis Fired By Bengals After 16 Seasons As Head Coach

NFL Head Coach Firings: Marvin Lewis In Cincinnati, Adam Gase In Miami, Vance Joseph In Denver, Steve Wilks In Arizona

From a New England perspective, where the longest-tenured head coach doesn't appear to ready to retire, the openings present opportunties for teams to poach either offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels or de facto defensive coordinator Brian Flores from Bill Belichick's staff. The Bengals re-signed Lewis last season despite mounting dissatisfaction from a fan base that has not seen a playoff win since the 1990 season.

"It's disappointing not being able to finish what we started, but I'm incredibly proud of the players and coaches for how they fought and worked every week", Joseph said, in part, in a statement.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced Monday that head coach Marvin Lewis would be leaving the team after 16 seasons. Bucs coach Dirk Koetter and Jets coach Todd Bowles already had been fired Sunday after their respective losses to close the regular season.

Marvin Lewis was once at the helm of a consistent victor, guiding the Cincinnati Bengals to four straight seasons with at least 10 wins, including a 12-win campaign in 2015.

The two took part in an exhibition fight that was clouded in uncertainty as to whether or not it was ever going to really happen. The American said in quotes published by BBC Sport: "It was all about entertainment - we had a lot of fun".

Lewis leaves Cincinnati with an 0-7 mark in the postseason, the worst mark by an National Football League coach. Gase was 23-25 in three seasons in South Florida.

The Bengals, who sustained a number of key injuries, went 6-10 this year and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third straight season. Lewis won a lot of games over his career with the Bengals. How does one get to coach that long?

Denver let Vance Joseph go after he went 11-21 in two seasons. There was a succession plan for Hue Jackson to take over as Bengals head coach before he left to coach the Browns, and since he returned midseason after his firing in Cleveland, many have hypothesized that it's inevitable Jackson will take over.
