Tkachuk's timeline for new contract not affected by Matthews' deal

Leafs re-sign Auston Matthews to five-year contract

Auston Matthews, Maple Leafs agree to five-year contract extension through 2024 season

The average annual value of the contract for the three-time NHL All-Star is $11.634 million.

Marner is going to shatter his previous best for goals and points in his third season, and still has a shot at becoming the first Leafs player since Doug Gilmour in 1993-94 to crack the 100-point barrier.

The Leafs hadn't reached the playoffs in back-to-back campaigns since 2003 and 2004 and haven't won a playoff series since 2004, losing in the first round to Boston a year ago and Washington in 2017.

The 21-year-old Marner leads the Leafs in scoring this season with 63 points (20 goals and 43 assists).

However, the Leafs have to be mindful of an impending cap crunch and general manager Kyle Dubas spoke Tuesday of paying a premium for Matthews because he's a centre who scores goals at an "elite, elite rate".

According to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, Matthews will get 93 percent of his money in the form of signing bonuses. In 2016-17, Matthews captured the Calder Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year and was named to the NHL's All-Rookie Team after establishing Maple Leaf rookie records for goals (40) and points (69) in a season, which led all National Hockey League rookies in both categories.

"It's always a business, but I grew up here", Marner said before Wednesday's game against the Ottawa Senators. In 182 regular-season games, Matthews has 178 points (97 goals and 81 assists).

As of now, Toronto is 32-17-3, good for 67 points and second place in the Atlantic Division behind the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bob McKenzie of TSN has the year-by-year breakdown of the Matthews deal. When it gets done, it gets done. It was his fourth goal in the past five games following a seven-game drought. "Just from our fans, the support we get, walking around the street, being recognized, that is not something I ever really imagined as a kid growing up in Arizona to playing in a market like this".

Major League Baseball to rename disabled list as 'injured list'
The NBA places injured players on the inactive list, while the National Hockey League and NFL both have injured reserve lists. The current DL includes a 10-day version for short-term injuries and a longer 60-day version.

He has also represented the United States at two World Junior Championships (2015, 2016), capturing a bronze in 2016, two World U-18 Championships (2014, 2015), capturing gold at both, and the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

Auston Matthews is locked in.

A contract would likely be done today if Toronto was willing to hand him the same $58.17-million, five-year deal Matthews signed.

What do you think about the Toronto Maple Leafs and their chances of winning the Stanley Cup now that Auston Matthews is signed?

Rielly finished a give-and-go with Zach Hyman at the top of the crease after the Senators scored two straight goals early in the period to tie the game 4-4.

Hyman, Andreas Johnsson and John Tavares also scored for Toronto on Wednesday.

As Tip of the Tower contributor Kurt Hill wrote in his latest article, there's no way of knowing whether the Leafs did lowball Marner while discussing a contract in the summer.

It is ironic for an agent to say he does not want the contract negotiations to be a distraction for his client and then proceeds to put a target on his head.
