Greece approves protocol for Macedonia to join North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

Greek parliament ratifies NATO accord with Republic of North Macedonia

Greece’s Parliament backs Nato admission for Macedonia

Greece's parliament on Friday ratified a NATO accord with the Republic of North Macedonia, paving the way for Skopje's entry to the US-led military alliance.

Tsipras and his counterpart from Skopje, Zoran Zaev, achieved the Prespa Agreement, meant to bring to an end the decades-long dispute over the use of the name "Republic of Macedonia" by the former Yugoslav republic.

The vote in Athens came two days after, at a ceremony in Brussels, current Nato member states' ambassadors signed the accession protocol of the country that when the Prespa Agreement comes into full effect will be known as the Republic of North Macedonia.

The row centred around concerns that Skopje would make territorial claims to a neighbouring region in northern Greece, which Athens says has used the name Macedonia since the times of Alexander the Great. Negotiations between Greece and Macedonia were protracted and hard.

Once all Nato member states have ratified the accession protocol, the Republic of North Macedonia will be a member of the Alliance.

"Today's vote closes the most important round of obligations involving Greece", Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was quoted as saying before the vote in the Parliament.

It also exposed old rivalries with Russian Federation, in a region where Moscow jostles for influence with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the EU.

The name issue has kept Macedonia from joining the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation since its independence in 1991.

Lawmakers late February 8 voted 153-140 to ratify the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation accession protocol for neighboring Macedonia that must now also be approved by all other alliance members.
