During the testimony, Cohen said he had spoken to Novartis over the telephone six times and that the firm had specifically hired him so that it could have access to the Trump administration, according to live feeds published by media outlets.
Trump administration official Lynne Patton defended her presence at Michael Cohen's public hearing before House Oversight Committee on Wednesday after a Democratic lawmaker called her a "prop". There, Meadows tried to rebut Cohen's charge that President Donald Trump is a racist.
During her questioning of Cohen, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) made known her feelings about Meadows' guest.
"The fact that someone would actually use a prop, a black woman, in this chamber, in this committee, is alone racist in itself", she said.
Tlaib spoke over Meadows and continued with her statement.
Meadows took great offense, vigorously demanding that Tlaib's words be stricken from the record.

He then shared some advice with the social media star as she continues to deal with the aftermath of the scandal. I wasn't dancing all over him. "I want to give you the opportunity to share your truth", said Pinkett-Smith.
"She says as a daughter of a man born in Birmingham, Alabama, that there is no way that she would work for an individual who was a racist", he added.
Meadows' defense for himself? She later apologized for insinuating Meadows was a racist, but insisted that he committed a "racist act".
Tlaib was met with a strong rebuke, not only from Meadows - who countered that "it's racist to suggest that I asked [Patton] to come in here for that reason" - but from fellow Democrat and House Oversight Committee chair Elijah Cummings (partial transcript below).
"It was a very good conversation", said Meadows. Many were outraged and accused Meadows of throwing out the "I have a black friend" argument to refute the idea that he is racist. Tlaib hides behind her skin color and thinks she can get away with this behavior.
Patton, a successful businesswoman, emphasized that the president is not a racist. He pointed to an article published past year, "A brief history of the 'Black Friend, ' " as a helpful primer on the use of that argument. "It makes us more apt to subscribe to these flimsy progress narratives, that racial progress is an unbroken line and we're getting better all the time". "To prop up one member of our entire race of Black people and to say that nullifies that is totally insulting", she said. That lie could only be sustained with the cooperation of black people, who went along with the ruse mostly to fend off white fears about slave rebellions. "It's not politically and socially legible outside of the colorblind racism framework", he said. But I am not calling the gentleman, Mr. Meadows a racist.so I'm saying that in itself it is a racist act. We'll have much more on Michael Cohen's historic testimony to Congress later in the broadcast. "We're going to do it!"
