A sign displays the jackpot for Mega Millions lottery drawings in New York October 22, 2018. According to a lottery commission statement, the person submitting the claim has chosen to remain anonymous.

A statement from the lottery commission said this win goes on record as the second-largest payout in United States history.

It is not unprecedented for winners to wait to claim their prize.

Time nearly ran out for the US Mega Million victor to take home the jackpot, since they only had 180 days from the draw date to claim it.

SC law allows lottery winners to remain anonymous but those provisions are different in most other states.

"We are delighted that the victor is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize", said Hogan Brown, the Commission's Executive Director.

The winning ticket was purchased between October 20 and 23 at the KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

The ticket was purchased October 23, at the KC Mart in Simpsonsville, a town of about 22,000 people outside of Greenville.

"A simple act of kindness led to an awesome outcome", the commission said. In New Hampshire a year ago, an anonymous woman who won the lottery took the state to court to keep her identity a secret.

SC is one of the states where lottery winners can elect to remain anonymous.

The anonymous victor won $1.2 billion in the MegaMillions jackpot. "We want the public to know these games are fair and that they can see someone actually won", he told the Star Tribune. Would the prize never be claimed?

Economic experts in SC decreased their revenue projections because of the holdup, the Post and Courierreported.

The victor had until April 19 to claim the prize. And that could get passed along to taxpayers if a proposal goes through to give a $50 rebate to each person who files income taxes.

It was quite possibly the biggest lottery mystery in SC history. It is also South Carolina's first Mega Millions jackpot win. If the jackpot had not been claimed by then, each participating state in the Mega Millions game would have gotten back the money it contributed to the jackpot.
