The filing at a Chicago federal court alleges that the aerospace company defrauded investors over the safety features of Boeing's 737 Max aircraft which was involved in two fatal crashes: one in Ethiopia last month and another in Indonesia past year.

Net orders, an indication of future demand, fell to 95 aircraft in the first quarter from 180 a year earlier.

Deliveries of finished Max jets also tumbled, to 11 from 26 in February.

Boeing said at the weekend it is cutting production of its 737 jetliner for the first time since the September 11 attacks in NY as the plane maker works to limit financial damage from the global grounding of its newest and best-selling aircraft model.

Boeing reported a combined 209 deliveries of commercial and defense fixed and rotary wing aircraft during the first three months of 2019, including 89 deliveries of the grounded 737 MAX.

It is still unclear when the MAX jets will fly again, with global regulators including China saying they would join a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration panel to review the aircraft's safety.

American Airlines operates 24 of the 737 Max 8 planes and has an additional 76 jets on order from Boeing.

The company announced on April 5 that it would cut production of its 737 short-haul jetliner by 20 percent, to 42 a month, from the middle of this month.

The company had been ramping up MAX deliveries before the grounding, with the planes accounting for almost half of its deliveries in the last few months.
